Rasa Sayang is a short film premiering in 2024.
Rasa began as a short story, and was published in Queer Southeast Asia: A Transgressive Literary Journal, and explores ideas of identity and freedom.
The film’s title, Rasa Sayang, translates directly to “loving feeling”. It references a folk song from the Malay Archipelago, and invokes a sense of love, loss, and nostalgia.
Mei appears to be an ordinary schoolgirl. But she has a secret — her sexuality. While casually hooking up with popular classmate J, Mei drifts through life uncertain and yearning. Until she meets Lina, a beautiful pontianak. Connected by the red thread of fate, they explore what it means to love and be free.
Rasa Sayang is a story by and for the Asian and LGBTQIA+ communities. It hopes to add to the diverse landscape of films by queer people of colour.
As we are now in post-production, Rasa Sayang needs your help to raise attention for future screenings and festival distribution. We hope to target Asian and LGBTQIA+ festivals for future screenings and events.
